This August as Buwan ng Wika, introduce yourself to the diverse language of Philippine textile through block weaving and join us on Aug 16 as we launch four (4) beginner-friendly patterns with MAKIHABI Block Weaving at Common Room Mess Studio at The Atrium of Makati!

Block Weaving is a project-based workshop that introduces the use of a felt board as our loom. This makes it easier to follow patterns with techniques, so you can focus more on creating!

The workshop will feature four (4) traditional weaving patterns from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao: Kantarines, Kusikos, Hablon, and Langkit. The class will start with a basic introduction to weaving and to reading and weaving graph patterns. I'll also demonstrate the traditional weaving techniques using a small table loom.

By the end of our session, you'll finish a handwoven coaster with your chosen pattern, and gain new knowledge about weaving! Kids are welcome to join, beginner and intermediate weavers will have fun learning new techniques.

Workshop date & time: August 16, 2pm-5pm (3 hours)

Workshop fee: Php950 per head, inclusive of the use of materials and take-home finished project.

You may book multiple passes if you're joining with friends! Kindly write their names in the notes before checkout so I can take note of this on the workshop date.

Can I book more than 1 project?

Yes, with an additional fee. One project is about 1.5 hours long, and you can select an add-on kit on top of your workshop fee :) But please note that this only applies to 1 person only and can't be shared between 2.

What is included in the workshop fee?

The Php950 per head comes with the use of materials and your take-home finished project. Extra kits are available for purchase at the venue.

Makihabi = to weave together. This is a community gathering and weaving workshop series. Basic weaving lessons are ‘chopped down’ into different beginner-friendly sessions, made affordable and accessible to more people who want to learn how to weave. See upcoming dates below!

Frequently asked questions

The workshop fee comes with the 3-hour guided class, use of materials, your take-home project, and the complete kit (not applicable for Makihabi workshops and Weaving on a Heddle Loom workshop).

The Art of Yarn Studio is located in Kapitolyo, Pasig, Metro Manila, Philippines. The exact location will be sent to you after signing up for a workshop. Walk-ins to classes are not allowed.

This depends on the workshop, so please check the description for the complete information. But most beginner classes are designed for kids 7 y/o + and adult beginners.
